My 22nd birthday has arrived and while it is completely insignificant compared to last year I have been looking forward to it just as much. I have a birthday tradition that keeps me anticipating September 18th every year and I think that it is such a good idea that I want to share it with you in the hopes that you can brighten your own special day just a little bit when the time comes.
A few years ago my dad (Tony numero dos), uncle (Drake and or Buckethead, depending on how well you know him) and myself went to my cabin for a weekend of hunting, fishing, drinking and all-around testosterone indulgence. It happened to fall on the magic date and I declared that it would have to become a yearly endeavor because despite the bad sunburn and hangover it was the best birthday I could envision.
So it was spoken and so it has been.
I know to some of you this doesn't have the allure of a night at the bar with a bunch of people buying you shots but it has become a very special occasion in my life. You see, there is more to it than celebrating another year gone by, it is a celebration of all that is good in my life.
First off, the cabin is my favorite place in the world. A lone building on the bank of the Upper Iowa River, secluded unto itself by miles of timber and farmland, it is the place I seek refuge from the world no matter what is plaguing me at the time. If I'm lucky I get up there three times a year now even though it's only a couple hour's drive because of the pace of my life now, whish when I think about it is all the more reason for me to get there more often.
Few people understand the solitude of being in a place where no outside factors can bother you, no phones, no people, scarcely an airplane flies overhead, we are completely alone there. That may sound scary to some, in fact it is to a lot of the people I take there for the first time. But if you take a look at the night sky in the dead of winter in such a place, an eerie calm will fall.

“A Very Happy Birthday ” A Critical Analysis of “Birthday Girl” by Haruki Murakami Haruki Murakami’s “Birthday Girl” is a piece that can take the reader into the past and help us analyze if any of our wishes ever came true. Hopefully we all reach those birthday milestones and we get whatever it is we wished for. The main character in this story has reached an important milestone birthday in Japan. At 20 you are a full fledged adult, a member of Japanese society so this birthday is special. The main character however has had a horrible day. Most would think that this is a cut and dry story however it is not. Although short the complexity of the story brings you to a climax and then leaves you more confused even after you do a literary analysis of it. This story appeals to the masses because it simply asks you to ask yourself if you could be granted one wish what would that wish be? Repression functions as a wiping out of the consciousness of specific, unhappy, psychological events. Everyone has had horrible breakdowns and bad birthdays in our life. Thinking of it in a deeper way though, from kids we are taught that our birthday is special. When your mom wakes you up with your birthday breakfast, lunch and dinner that day is made special. As a kid you count down the hours, minutes, and seconds to that day.

“Birthday Party” by Katherine Brush uses literary devices such as tone, point of view, diction, and sensory details to achieve her purpose. The title of this short story is very deceiving the tone is different from the tone of the story. The tone changes from happy to sad as soon as the cake is brought out. The women tried to show affection and love towards her husband by the cake but it was basically turned down. The point of view is through a random person who doesn’t know the couple at all. The speaker doesn’t know how they are as a couple but can see that the woman is upset at her husband’s reaction to the cake. “You looked at him and you saw this and you thought, “Oh, now, don’t be like that!” this quote almost lets us know that the speaker wanted to jump in and defend the women but can’t because she does not know the couple. Katharine Brush's short story "Birthday Party" reveals how joyless a marriage can be when spouses are too unimaginative to stray from the bourgeois notions of how a man-woman relationship should function. Brush writes of a sweet and sensitive wife who takes her husband out to eat on his birthday . Instead of being pleased when the wife surprises her husband with a cake, the husband is cross and unkind. Upon noticing her husband's displeasure, the wife sits crying submissively. The husband has asserted his role as head of the household too practical for frivolous romance and the wife sadly obeys his.

“Let’s get the (Birthday ) party started” A short story by Dave Barry Childhood amnesia is a well known fact. Most adults are unable to remember infancy or toddlerhood. Therefore, one wonders whether it is even worth to celebrate a toddler’s birthday . Dave Berry’s short story “Let's get the (birthday ) party started right” is mostly a low level comedy text that uses caricatures, one liners and hyperboles to communicate the idea that planning parties can be very stressful and exhausting, especially with kids, but that it is worth it. Dave Berry’s short story is mostly a low level comedy text. Low level means that the plot takes priority over characters. “Let’s get the (birthday ) party started right” is not focused on the characters and there are no detailed descriptions about who they are. Also, the characters are not what makes the text humorous. It is rather the plot and series of events which make the short story amusing and laughable. “All I know is, the organized activity we had for them was: art. Yes! We invited small children to our house and DELIBERATELY GAVE THEM PAINT.” (Barry) This part is a perfect example where you can see that the plot is humorous and not the characters which would be the toddlers in this case. That is what makes the story low level comedy text. One essential element of humor that is used to make the short story humorous are caricatures. Caricatures are characters that represent.

Ko-Ko is very bold and rambunctious. She is immensely outspoken and isn’t afraid to say what’s on her mind. The inspiration for this character came from one of my best friends. She told me I was too conventional and I needed to live a little, so we created my alter ego Ko-Ko who was the total opposite of me. “AAAAAHHHHH, where is the train!” I yelled. “Ko-Ko, will you calm down, it’ll be here in a minute.” Jaylyn said. The train always took forever and a day to come, it really did. That didn’t stop me from complaining every time though. People who complain over every little thing got on my last right nerve, it really did. But I was one of em’ and I wouldn’t change for nobody. Anyways we were on our way to the beach; see it was my birthday and we were having a “girl’s day out”. I started to play a joke on Chante but I didn’t really feel like it. I have to be in the mood to do stuff like that. Finally the train came and we got on. It was a nice one too, you know, the ones with the digital sign that says every stop; not like the raggedy ones that always reek of urine. Then, this guy got on with an old, worn out phone. I hate to people with bogus phones. I could dislike someone just by the type of phone they had. I know that sounds mean but seeing someone with a bumy phone always got to me. “Excuse me sir.” I said “yes?” was his reply “Why is yo phone so crummy?” I said very curiously. “Ko-Ko!” Jaylyn and Chante yelled in unison. “WHAT. Yall know I don’t.

have been waiting for that day to come, first day of January used to be the most exciting day for me because it was my birthday . an important day that I will celebrate with the one and only person who I loved the most, Ben. He was my childhood friend, my neighbor, my brother, my best friend, my love and most importantly he is the only person who will remember and celebrate my birthday . give me presents and wish me a happy birthday . He means the whole world to me. But now, everything has changed, first day of January is no longer the day that will make me smile brightly, it has became the day that will brimmed my eyes with tears. I still remember it clearly, that day I could not stop from smiling. Just like how the morning sunlight brightens up the small moderate room of mine, that was how bright my smile was. As I sat on the table at the kitchen to eat my breakfast, my mom, my sister, and my uncle gave me a weird gaze as they saw me smiling for no reason. “Why are you so happy?” my Mom asked. “If you really care about me then you should know.” That was my short reply as I continued smiling and she continued eating. She had always been like that, never cared about me, never treats me as her daughter, I was never loved by my Mother. She even said in one of our arguments that I was nothing but a mistake. Since I was born, she never once celebrates my birthday and always compared me with my older sister who treated.

My Ultimate Birthday Surprise I had gone to spend the week with my cousin, Brandon, and his wife, Jennie the summer of my sixteenth birthday . I had no idea that Brandon had the most thoughtful and extravagant birthday gift I could ever imagine. Brandon had, without his wife’s knowledge, set up an appointment for Jennie and me to go skydiving. I had always wondered if I would ever have the courage to jump out of an airplane at 13,000 feet in the air. Skydiving had always been a dream of mine. My dream was made a reality in the blistering summer of 2010. My bags were packed and I was ready to spend the week with Brandon, who I have always thought of like a brother, and his wife, Jennie. It never occurred to me that Brandon had anything out of the ordinary planned for my birthday . I was mistaken. After Brandon picked me up from my house, he told me he had a special surprise waiting on me when we got back to his house. I was kind of skeptical because Brandon had never really gone out of his way to do anything for my birthday . When we got back to his house Jennie had dinner on the table and ready for us to sit down and eat. After we finished dinner and dessert, Brandon handed me a pink envelope with my name written sloppily on the front. I knew almost immediately Jennie had not had anything to do with this gift. I assumed it was just an ordinary birthday card from the local.

unique mission. So a birthday is a momentous occasion, to be commemorated just as a nation commemorates its birth or as an organization celebrates its founding. Still, it is much more than an occasion to receive gifts. It is a chance to remember the day that a major event occurred, to celebrate and give thanks and to reflect upon how well we are fulfilling our calling. Because time itself is like a spiral, something special happens on your birthday each year: The same energy that G-d invested in you at birth is present once again. It is our duty to be receptive to that force. How do we do so? By committing to a life guided by G-d's will, and by using the abilities and resources we were born with to perfect ourselves and society, and to make the world a good and sacred home for G-d. A birthday is a time to celebrate birth itself, the joy of life. It is also an occasion to rethink your life: How great is the disparity between what I have accomplished and what I can accomplish? Am I spending my time properly or am I involved in things that distract me from my higher calling? How can I strengthen the thread that connects my outer life and my inner life? A birthday can also teach us the concept of rebirth. To recall our birth is to recall a new beginning. No matter how things went yesterday, or last year, we always have the capacity to try again. Your birthday is a refresher, a chance for.
