1 Guidelines for the Argumentative Essay The Rough Draft: The Introduction, Body, and Conclusion Paragraph.

2 Parts of the 5 Paragraph Essay I.Introduction Paragraph I.The Thesis Statement including 3 Reasons. II.The Body I.Constructing Topic Sentences. II.3 paragraphs supporting each of the reasons in the Thesis Statement. III.Countering the Opposition III.The Conclusion Paragraph

3 Introduction Paragraph The Introduction tries to familiarize the reader with the topic and the purpose of the essay. The Introduction offers a plan for the ensuing argument: – Introduction (Thesis Statement): “Tell them what you will prove.” – Body: “Prove to them.” – Conclusion: “Tell them what you have proved.”

4 Ways to Construct the Introduction Paragraph: Personal anecdote (a short, amusing, and/or interesting story about a real incident or person). Using Examples (real or hypothetical). Using Questions (Rhetorical). Using Quotations. Using shocking Statistics. Using striking Images ( described through your writing).

5 The Thesis Statement The thesis statement is the LAST SENTENCE in the Introduction Paragraph. The thesis statement is the most important sentence in the essay. It lets the reader know your answer to the question AND the 3 reasons why? The thesis statement is NOT a factual statement, however it’s a claim that MUST be proven throughout the essay.

6 The Body Paragraphs (3) Suggestions for the order of the paragraphs in the body: – General to Specific. – Most Important to Least Important. – Weakest Claim to Strongest Claim. – Etc.

7 The Body Paragraphs (3) When supporting each reason, think of each paragraph as a PERSUASIVE PARAGRAPH – persuade and prove to the reader that with that reason, that is why your monarch made the biggest impact. Use information from resources (not from your own perspective). – Quotes, Testimony, and statistics ( numbers and %).

8 The Opposing Argument Addressing the claims of the “opposition” is an important part of the argumentative essay. It demonstrates your “credibility” as a writer as you have researched multiple sides of the argument and have come to an informed decision.

9 The Opposing Argument “Counterarguments” can be inputted in multiple locations in the body paragraph. “Counterarguments” should be offered ONLY AFTER you have supported your reasons (affirmatives) with details. Build each of your main points as a contrast to oppositional claims.

10 What a Counterclaim should NOT be: Using rude or depreciating language can cause your audience to reject your position. Remain tactful, but not disrespectful.

11 The Conclusion Paragraph The Conclusion Paragraph REEMPHASIZES the main points made in the essay. Remember, this paragraph is when you tell the reader how you prove you thesis to be correct. You may speculate and foresee the future as a result of claim ( positive or negative). Avoid raising new claims in the conclusion. The essay has to have an “ending.”

Argumentative Essay Writing Hints: How To Use A Draft

How to Write Argumentative Paper - From Rough Draft to Final Copy

The first thing you need to make absolutely clear is that an argumentative essay must generate an argument. If you are one of those people who likes to give a balanced view to everything in life, then don't bring that type of behaviour into your essay writing. You choose the right topic and then you choose one side of the argument. You're not there to write a balanced view of both sides. You are there to justify one side of the argument. Get that fact right.

And before you start your rough draft and carry out research and planning etc. you must choose the best possible topic.

Can it be answered with a simple yes or no?

Now some students choose an argumentative topic and believe that it is a good choice because it certainly divides people down the middle. But that doesn't necessarily make it good. For example if the question you raised in mounting your argument can be answered with a simple yes or no, then there is little depth to your topic. The ideal answer would be ‘yes, however’. That requires further explanation.

The expression ‘rough draft’ means just that. The notes you take and the early writing that you make plays little or no attention to spelling and grammar. You simply want to get your ideas down on paper. You want to get your plan on a single sheet listing the paragraphs and the points to be made in each one. This is not the material you hand into your examiner or teacher. This is your rough work.

Now comes the polishing

So having chosen a topic which is certainly controversial or creates controversy and which has depth, and then chosen which side of the argument you are going to support, you collect quality research material. Remember irrelevant material does not help your essay.

Then with all the information laid out in simple form in your plan or outline you start to write your final copy. And this is the work you polish. This is the work which has all spelling and grammatical errors removed and which you show to friends or family for feedback and make any other changes in order to make the final copy the best it possibly can be.

The smarter you work in the rough draft stages, the easier it is to work on the final copy.

Why a argumentative essay? The ability to write a convincing essentially non-biased argumentative research essay is critical in college writing.

You must use three different sources in this paper.

Note: check the list of taboo topics before you begin writing your paper.

step one
Choose a topic that you can argue either a position or a solution. For example, to argue a position would be to argue for or against something, like the Death Penalty. To argue a solution is to argue how to solve something, like how to solve the air pollution problem in Phoenix.
Example: The Effects of PC on Higher Education

step two
On a blank sheet of paper, write your topic down and at least 5 pros and 5 cons for your topic.
Or, if you are writing a solution paper, look at at least five different solutions for the problem.

step three
See how the pros and cons relate. Decide which you want to write about. Do you want to focus on the pros or the cons. Pick the one you feel offers the most possibilities for exploration.
Or, choose the solution that seems the most logical, the most doable.

step four
Freewrite. Look at your diagram for ideas

step five
Transform your chosen topic into a "Guiding Question" and write it down.

What is the main question that your essay will answer?

What are three main effects of Political Correctness on Higher Education.

step six
Find at least three sources to help you answer your guiding question. You must use these sources in your work either in a quote, paraphrase and/or summary.
    source guidelines
  1. Use database sources and web pages. You can send web pages and articles off of databases to my email address. Be sure and turn in your resources with your final paper. I will not accept any paper without the sources turned in to me.
  2. Create a Works Cited page from your sources.

step seven
Now that you have gathered your information and collected new information, create an outline of your paper.

step eight
Answer your "Guiding Question" directly with your thesis statement.

Why are literary works being banned when their overall theme is positive? Because of over-zealous proponents of Political Correctness, once celebrated literary works like Mark Twain's Huckleberry Finn. William Shakespeare's Hamlet, and Harper Lee's To Kill a Mockingbird are being banned despite their important universal themes.

step nine
Check your outline. Place your thesis at the top of the outline followed by the causes or effects: I. II. III. Under each main point, place two main specific points that will support the general topic sentence and the thesis. Use capital letters for the specific points.

step ten
Write the rough draft.

step eleven
Revise the rough draft.

Argumentative Essay - Rough Draft

Organic Food, Just a Trend?

When shopping at my local grocery store, I often pass by organic meats, vegetables, and fruit and head straight for the conventionally farmed food. My main goal is to get the items needed at the best possible price. But with the growing popularity of organic foods, I began to wonder what are the differences between organic and non-organic. Organic foods are grown without the use of pesticides, hormones, and antibiotics, but is organic food really better for you than non-organic, or is it just the latest trend?

Conventional farmers employ the use of growth hormones to increase the amount of milk an animal can produce and increase the rate at which an animal reaches its slaughter weight. Although the FDA states the animals which are injected with these hormones are safe for human consumption, I’m a little skeptical. I see kids today that are 12 and 13, but they look like they’re 18. Could it be that traces of these hormones remain in the meat, and when consumed, are causing our kids to develop faster?

The use of growth hormones also increases the risk of infection. Antibiotics are used to combat these infections, but are not only given to the sick animal. They are given to the entire herd as a preventive measure, but the over exposure to antibiotics can result in bacteria resistant to antibiotics, and then transferred to humans. Again, the FDA’s stance is that these antibiotics are safe for human consumption.

Additionally, industrial farms house animals in cramped living spaces, often standing in their own waste. This combined with stress reduces their immune system, leaving the animals more prone to infections brought on by sources other than growth hormones. Again, more antibiotics are administered to prevent this.

When it comes to produce, conventional farmers use pesticides to kill bugs that are harmful to the crops. The FDA states that the consumption of small amounts of pesticides is harmless, but would you eat the pesticides used in your garden? The answer is probably no. On the other hand, organic foods are grown in manure, and can transfer dangerous bacteria such as E. coli to people.

Organic farming is more environmentally friendly than conventional farming. Since organic farmers do not use pesticides and herbicides, the soil is not contaminated. Conventional farming also ‘over farms’ the soil by not rotating crops, which may effect the fertility of the land, and mechanical cultivation pollutes the air with carbon.

While organic foods may have reduced health risks, the financial cost of these food items can be prohibitive. For example, the cost of organic milk at my local grocery store is over three dollars more than the non-organic. According to the New York Time, organic foods are typically 20 percent to 100 percent more expensive. In today’s economy, who can afford this?

When I stop to think about all the chemicals both used in the farming of animals and produce entering my body, I wonder what long term effects this will cause. Cancer is more prevalent than ever, could this be the cause? And what about my daughter? What effects will she have to deal with later in life. With the questionable techniques used in today’s industrial farming process, organic farming seem like the best choice.

Hi, I really enjoyed reading your essay; I always thought organic food was better for you. I never thought it was this much detail going on with organic food. You did a great job explaining what your argument is and where you wish to go with this article. “Are their differences between organic and non-organic foods”? I did not get a clear approach to where you stood on the issue. Are you arguing that organic food is no different than are regular food? Which in your opening paragraph it states that, which needs more focus. I see that your goal is to find out if organic food is just a trend, however seeing more of your opinion would be great. Thesis is good.

Your detail to organic food is very strong and informational, which I believe is setting up your essay very well. “Organic foods are grown without the use of pesticides, hormones, and antibiotics, but are organic food really better for you than non-organic”?
Your essay makes me want to read more; it’s a very interesting topic, a great draft. Is it possible to see some compared prices on the same product? Organic vs. Non Organic. Not too much just a few examples. Also is their studies that have been done that proves that organic food is indeed better for you? If so I would love to see that in your essay.

The details regarding the farmers and how they tend to the animal is great. It made me scared to eat meat; is there something being done about this? Are the farms abiding to the health regulations? (weekly inspections) Your personal opinion for you and your daughter help give a family feel to your essay.

Your essay to me is going in the right direction as a whole. While leaving comments on your essay, it has truly helped me evaluate my own. It has showed me attention to detail and how important it is. Also to not get lost and to keep it clear. This review really helps you stay focus, while showing you different techniques to fulfilling your requirements needed for this essay.

It took me about 35 minutes to read and review our essay. Great job!

I just want to start by saying that I am far from an English professional, so some things may not be the EXACT right thing, but are only my opinion on the essay! If I am too harsh please let me know, but also PLEASE feel free to pick my essay to pieces, “criticism makes progress”… But anywho on to this paper. I feel that the the essay was both inadequate but adequate at the same time. I feel that throughout the essay you never gave the reader your stance on the topic, but I feel that you used GREAT detail such as tying it in the everyday life and stating facts…. So Great Job with that. The thing that I find most interesting is that I don’t think alot of people think about what is going into the food that they consume, at least I don’t. I’m a big meat eater so to think about this kinda alters how I feel about it, but I’ve had organic food before and the taste is very DIFFERENT so I would probably never switch from organic to inorganic. I found it interesting that the effect of hormones could lead to infection. Makes you think about how much infected meat we really do consume. I think with all of your topics you may want to extend a little bit. I would ask maybe ” do studies show what the difference of inorganic and organic foods are in children” or maybe “how would you go about obtaining organic foods”…. I felt that in your first paragraph you should have stated which posistion you were taking on the topic and explain why. I also felt as if your paragraph 3&4 could have been combined. Since it is an argumentative essay i feel as though some or all of the questions should be left out because you are trying to convince us that your stance is the one we should side with…. ie…. “Americans should consume organic food over inorganic because…..”, ” The traces of hormones are left in the body of our teenagers causing them to grow (if this is true), ” you would not eat pesticides out of your own garden” things like that. I would also go into more depth and add length to the paragraphs. Overall the detail and concept was very good, and I do applaud you on that. By reading your essay in helped open my eyes to a better way to critique my own paper, and If I’m not mistaken I think I may have asked a couple of questions in my essay as well. I always think I need to check out my organization a little more too. It took me a total of 35-40 minutes to read and review your essay. Good Job

America itself is one big trend. I was listening to an extremely interesting lecture talking about poverty, and there’s actually a celebrity trend going on to adopt children, and start organizations. A trend to start organizations! That wounds crazy but its true and it’s amazing, so not every trend is necessarily bad. And yes organic food and filtered water over tap and now over water bottles are also huge trends. People do care about what’s going into their bodies as well on them and around them. There are organic all detergents for cleaning, organic body everything, from shampoo to lip balm. My brother’s house for example is toner is organic, as well as shampoo, dishwashing soap, and even his wood cleaner, we tease him, but he is the healthiest one of all. There is a taste difference between organic and nonorganic because organic is crap free. It’s like eating a piece of gum that fell between the couch cousins and one fresh out of the wrapper, although they are the same flavor, one lacks all the extra special add-ons. Hopefully if the trend of organic continues and explodes, they’re prices will fall since they’re demand has gone up.
